Discernment Counseling
Are you quietly asking yourself, “Is this marriage salvageable… will I ever get my needs met or is it really time to let go?”
When a relationship reaches this point, the uncertainty can feel destabilizing. One partner may already be leaning toward leaving, while the other still hopes for reconnection. Or maybe you both feel exhausted and unsure how you arrived here.
Discernment Counseling is a structured, short-term process designed specifically for couples at this crossroads. It is different from traditional couples therapy. Rather than immediately working on communication patterns or conflict resolution, we slow the urgency and focus on clarity.
Over the course of one to five sessions, we thoughtfully explore three possible paths forward:
- Continuing the relationship as it is
- Moving toward separation or divorce
- Committing to a defined period of couples therapy with genuine effort toward repair
Each session includes time together and individual conversations, creating space for honest reflection without defensiveness or pressure. Instead of rehashing the same arguments, we examine how you got here, what each of you has contributed to the current dynamic, and whether meaningful change feels possible and desired.
From my Chicago-based practice, I provide Discernment Counseling in Chicago and via secure telehealth to couples throughout Illinois. If you are considering divorce but feel uncertain about your next step, this process offers a steady, contained way forward. The goal of Discernment Counseling is not to persuade either of you to stay or to separate. It is to help you both make a deliberate, grounded decision that will allow you to tackle next steps with integrity.
